Following France’s departure, New Zealand hopes to co-host the 2025 Rugby League World Cup with Australia, according to the head of the country’s national team.

France officially announced on Monday that it will no longer be hosting the 2025 World Cup, citing a failure to achieve the required financial benchmarks. Greg Peters, chief executive of the New Zealand Rugby League, indicated that New Zealand and Australia might co-host the 2025 World Cup.

With our ARLC (Australian Rugby League Commission) colleagues and others, we are keen in investigating other proposals in this region to develop a different and exciting competition that can replace France 2025, Peters told New Zealand media.

It’s still early, but we had already begun planning before this news, and we have some recent experience from 2017, when Australia and New Zealand hosted it.

However, we think that with assistance from Pasifika nations and Pasifika components, we can build something really unique here. The event would need to be staged in 2025, although Peters claimed it would be doable for the following hosts.

It is feasible (for 2025), and maintaining the cycle would unquestionably be the first objective, according to Peters. “It would be good to get it back into the cycle and avoid other major events around the world,” the author writes. “Especially after we missed the cycle with the postponement of the 2021 World Cup.”

Australia and New Zealand chose not to participate in the last World Cup in England in 2021, citing COVID-19, therefore it was postponed until 2022. In the end, Australia triumphed in England, securing a record-extending 12th World Cup victory.

The head of Australia’s National Rugby League, Andrew Abdo, said it was too early to speculate about moving the competition there.

Abdo told Australian reporters, “We’re hard at work as to what that schedule looks like over the next five years. We should be able to discuss those plans in greater detail very soon, hopefully.
